Is Relapse An Inevitable Part Of The Recovery Journey?
My last drink was 2 shots of vodka at 9am.
Only a few hours before I turned bright yellow and began throwing up blood.
That was July 17, 2017. I’ve not had a drink since and haven’t come close to relapsing.
How can that be possible?
It’s because I’m certain that if I have even one drink, I’ll pass out and die.
That’s not necessarily true though.
That’s the great thing about having faith or a belief.
Drinking alcohol will kill you, the doctor warned me.
“If you’re worried about starting to drink again, I suggest you head straight to the bar and call it quits the moment you walk out the door. We kept you from passing away, but now you must take responsibility for your own survival. If you don’t believe that’s feasible and you have no plans to enhance your life in any way via sobriety, you might as well go back to drinking. Everything we’ve done here would have been for nothing if you don’t look after yourself”.
Belief is not proof that something is true; rather, it is a dedication to the existence of a possibility.
Maybe you’re not an alcoholic after all?
That statement is more accurate than you may realize.
Is it possible for you to become clean, stay sober, and create a life you love?
Absolutely.
We’re all just people with our own unique sets of experiences and feelings, each of which might make us feel like we’re at the center of the world.
“The Spotlight Effect”.
Weakness is weakness, suffering is suffering, but beauty is beauty, sobriety is sobriety, and joy is joy.
No matter how long or hard you fought, the fight was always the fight, and ultimately, you just got used to being numb to it.
After a while, you stop feeling anything about the fight because it has become so intrinsic to your identity and your way of life.
Thus, it is far preferable to avoid suffering and struggle altogether by getting sober in the process of constructing the life you love, rather than merely managing your symptoms or pain and agony as they arise.
Take care of yourself.
