Take it from me, an ex-alcoholic & liver failure survivor who once believed that alcohol was the key to enjoyment and anxiety relief.

Let me share my story, perhaps it can provide some solace or inspiration to anyone currently battling alcohol addiction.

There was a time in my life when I believed that alcohol was the solution to all my problems. A simple event like attending Disney on Ice was a daunting task, filled with anxiety and apprehension. In such situations, I would often resort to alcohol, falsely believing that it was my shield against the anxiety of interacting with thousands of people.

The thought of spending $17 on a Bud Light seemed like a small price to pay for the temporary peace it offered.

This pattern of seeking refuge in alcohol wasn’t limited to social events alone. A trip to the grocery store, a fleeting thought, an emotional trigger, or even abstract concepts often led me to believe that a sip of alcohol was a solution to my problems. The irony is, the majority of my anxiety was actually triggered by the very alcohol I was consuming. This realization only dawned on me during my recovery phase.

Recovery taught me that alcohol was the antagonist, not the savior of my story. It was the very reason why happiness and enjoyment seemed unattainable. Gradually, I started to replace alcohol with healthy alternatives. I learned to appreciate the smaller things in life, like the joy of watching Mickey Mouse at Disney on Ice, or simply focusing on the bubbles, lights, and lasers.

I learned to find comfort in the uncomfortable — anxiety, the unknown, and the unfamiliar.

If you’re still in the throes of alcohol addiction, remember, every sip is distancing you from the universe of experiences that don’t require a drink. You may think it’s keeping you in control, but in reality, it’s making you depend more on the next one. For those who are struggling, remember that help is always available.

Sites like Sober Not Sober can provide you with the support and guidance you need.

Here’s the bottom line: I’ve been where you are. I have fought the battle and I’m here to support you on your journey to sobriety. Recovery might seem impossible at first, but trust me, it’s worth it.

Every step you take towards sobriety is a step towards a healthier, happier you.
