Whether you’re merely ‘sober-curious’ or in the midst of active sobriety, the journey can often seem challenging and fraught with fear.

The conventional wisdom of staying away from triggers, avoiding the alcohol aisle, and isolating oneself from potential influences is heavily ingrained, indeed ubiquitous. However, this approach should be reconsidered, as it may be hindering your sobriety journey rather than aiding it.

Sobriety is a journey, not just a destination, and operating from a state of fear can inadvertently induce the anxiety and insecurity that might lead one to reach for a drink. The first step towards a more empowering path is a shift in mindset. Understand that avoidance isn’t necessarily an emblem of strength.

In fact, it is often indicative of an underlying fear that you are being controlled by the very thing you are trying to avoid.

Embracing triggers instead of fleeing from them could be the key to building resilience. This may seem counterintuitive, especially if you’re new to sobriety, but by acknowledging what catches our attention, we are better equipped to handle such triggers. Walking down that alcohol aisle might be a daunting task, but remember, you have more control than you think.

A fear-based perspective can generate a sense of dread and misery, feelings that we often try to numb with alcohol. But what if we told you the happiest people on the planet don’t find themselves continuously having to say no to alcohol because they’re too preoccupied with joy?

By truly embracing happiness, and not operating from a state of fear, we might find that we no longer feel the need to reach for a drink.

If you’re struggling with this shift in mindset, remember, you’re not alone.
