As people journey towards sobriety or navigate the sober-curious state, a common piece of advice thrown around is to avoid all triggers.

But have we ever stopped to think if that’s truly the best course of action? At BeyondSober, we believe it’s crucial to face our fears head-on and develop a resilience that provides us the strength in sobriety.

Our past experiences are a testament to our strength. They remind us that we’ve survived every challenging situation life has thrown at us. Remember the time you thought you wouldn’t make it, that you wouldn’t be able to pay that bill, or that you were at the brink of despair? You have not only survived such times but thrived. Even in the face of pain, turmoil, and suffering, you’ve persevered.

This, in essence, is what resilience truly is. By reflecting on these past circumstances, you realize the incredible resilience you possess.

Avoiding triggers is not the answer. We’re not here to live in fear of the mole on someone’s face or the smell of a particular location that may tempt us to reach for a drink. Instead, we want to harness this fear and transform it into courage, for bravery cannot exist without fear. It’s completely normal to face anxieties, depression, paranoia, and existential dread on your sobriety journey. This is simply your body adjusting to the absence of a numbing agent.

Facing these triggers head-on is key to understanding and overcoming them. This process should be done incrementally along your journey, not all at once. By doing this, we develop a deep sense of safety and trust in ourselves. It becomes easier to say no to alcohol when we trust who we are.

With every trigger, thank yourself and stand strong, for this is where you activate and strengthen your resilience.

At SoberNotSober, we understand the journey of sobriety comes with time and practice. If you ever find yourself struggling or seeking personal support, know that help is available. As an ex-alcoholic liver failure survivor, I’ve assisted thousands of individuals on their journey towards sobriety.

Remember, there’s nothing that you’re not willing to take on at this point, and there’s power in facing your triggers head-on.
