Unmasking Alcohol’s Illusion of Fun and Thrill
There’s a prevailing belief that alcohol makes everything better, a notion I intimately held for 24 years.
Engaging in activities such as watching the Super Bowl was unimaginable unless I was intoxicated. It was as if the presence of alcohol transformed the event into a thrilling experience. This, however, was far from the truth. The reality was that I wasn’t a fan of football.
Alcohol didn’t make the game more enjoyable or interesting, but rather, it numbed me to the realization that I didn’t actually like football. It created a façade, masking my genuine lack of interest.
The ability of alcohol to distort our perception extends beyond activities; it also affects our relationships. Ever questioned whether you genuinely like the people you associate with, or if it’s the alcohol that’s influencing your liking? As a sobriety coach,
I’ve encountered numerous individuals who confess that without drinking, they find their surroundings and even themselves boring. This is where the real issue lies. It’s not the world that’s boring, it’s just the sober, authentic version of ourselves we’re not used to.
Over time, alcohol becomes a crutch, an illusionary remedy for an unexciting life. This often leads to a dependency; a dangerous emotional addiction that convinces us that fun and enjoyment can’t exist without alcohol. It’s a crippling mindset that renders us incapable of experiencing life’s pleasures without a drink in hand.
This isn’t just about not knowing how to have fun without it, it’s about not knowing how to think or function without it.
The journey to sobriety is a challenging one, but it’s essential to remember that it’s possible to live and enjoy life without alcohol. It’s about learning and actively practicing entertaining ourselves when sober.
If not, there will always be that nagging thought in the back of our minds convincing us that just one drink won’t hurt, ignoring the fact that alcohol physically impairs our ability to have a genuine good time.
If you’re struggling with alcohol dependency or know someone who is, remember that help is available. At BeyondSober and SoberNotSober, you’ll find the resources and support needed to help you navigate your journey towards sobriety.
Remember, alcohol doesn’t make anything better; it’s just a smoke screen that prevents us from truly acknowledging and enjoying our reality.
